“Black Wall Street” was the nickname given to the Greenwood district of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the early 20th century. Greenwood was a prosperous Black community that was home to many successful businesses and entrepreneurs, earning it a reputation as one of the most affluent Black neighborhoods in the United States at the time.
The community was founded in the late 19th century by Black settlers who had been forced to relocate to Oklahoma during the Trail of Tears. Despite facing discrimination and segregation in other parts of Tulsa, the residents of Greenwood were able to create a thriving community that included a wide range of businesses, including banks, hotels, grocery stores, and more.
Unfortunately, the success of Greenwood also made it a target of jealousy and resentment from some white residents of Tulsa. This came to a head on May 31, 1921, when a white mob attacked and destroyed much of Greenwood in what has come to be known as the Tulsa Race Massacre. The attack left hundreds of people dead and thousands homeless, and Greenwood never fully recovered.
Despite the devastation of the massacre, the legacy of Black Wall Street lives on as a symbol of Black excellence and achievement, as well as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality in the United States.
